I am Kalei, a sophomore in high school. I joined NPAC in my eighth grade year. I have always been too insecure to perform in front of anyone outside of my family. The only times I got on stage was to make a speech or to dance hula. I like the idea of being vulnerable on stage artistically outside of that frightened me until I joined NPAC. Being in NPAC has taught me patience and faith. Being able to trust in myself, my talent, and my ability wouldn’t be possible without NPAC.
Going to New York, the part I’m most excited about is seeing the culture of art. Getting to see people with similar passions as me express themselves. Whether they are showing their passion for art on a stage or on a wall or in a display case, it’s beautiful and I’m excited to be a part of it.

Just being in New York is an experience in itself but I’m definitely looking forward to getting to bask in the greatness of many talented individuals. At MoMA and on Broadway. There are people who dedicated their lives to art through trials, tribulations, criticism, and ridicule. Personally they represent prosperity and perseverance. Getting to be one of the people that get to appreciate their devotion first hand. Just being able to say I went to NYC is a check on my bucket list. Another one would be getting to see the different types of fashion, art, and talent that emerge from the amazing city.

This experience has a lot to offer. Just for example the workshop that we are going to take is an opportunity to learn what it is like in the real world. Outside of the walls of the multi purpose building I don’t have a lot of expertise in performing arts. So getting the reality of maybe a cut throat audition from someone who went through it is great. Getting to see and understand the astonishing amount of patience these performers have is amazing. I believe this benefits me artistically, personally, and professionally. This trip will impact me as a person and a performer by showing me how to practice faith, consistency, and professionalism.

The only fears I have for this trip is it not living up to my expectations but that’s not likely. Apart from that is just under performing at the workshop. NPAC is what brought me into the world of performing arts so getting to represent it and show my pride for my journey and how far I’ve come means a lot because it wouldn’t be possible without NPAC. Representing NPAC is like showing my gratitude for their support and often their tough love.
